From the Summer of Love to Capitol Records

In 1966, guitarist Dennis Hiatt joined the Baltimore Steam Packet, a Marin County rock band emerging during the height of San Francisco's psychedelic music movement.

The band steadily built a following throughout the Bay Area and reached its peak during the Summer of Love in 1967. That same summer, the Baltimore Steam Packet signed a recording contract with Capitol Records and later recorded an album of original material.

Dennis and the band performed throughout California, sharing stages with many of the era's leading rock groups. His instrument at the time was a 1965 Fender Jazzmaster, purchased new shortly before he joined the band.

After the sessions, fate intervened. The band's manager died unexpectedly and its drummer was drafted into the Army. Without guidance, the group dissolved. Dennis moved on to college and a corporate career, but music was not finished with him.

Love at First Sight

By the late 1970s, Dennis was playing again. A casual jam group became more than 20 years of weekend performances at parties, weddings and social events.

In the early 1980s, he wanted another electric guitar to keep at home for practice. That search led him to a guitar shop in San Rafael and to a new 1983 Gibson Les Paul Custom in a striking cherry sunburst finish.

Unlike many vintage instruments from working musicians, this Les Paul did not spend decades traveling from club to club. It was used primarily at home, with only occasional recording session appearances. It was never taken on the road for gigs and returned to its case whenever it was not being played.

A True One Owner Gibson

It remained with the same musician from the day it was purchased new in San Rafael in 1983 until Dennis decided it was time for a new caretaker. Its history is direct, documented and inseparable from the life of its original owner.

Dennis retired in 2016 and now plays only for his own enjoyment. The 1965 Jazzmaster that accompanied him through the Baltimore Steam Packet years carries too much personal history to leave him. With two electric guitars no longer necessary, the Gibson was ready to begin its next chapter.
