Fender Pot Codes: How To Date A Fender By Its Potentiometers
There is a code stamped into the side of the back of your volume pot, and it dates that pot to the week it was made. Not the year. The week. Read it properly and it is the tightest date anywhere on the guitar, as long as you know what it can and cannot tell you.

What A Pot Code Is
Every potentiometer, the volume and tone controls under your pickguard, carries a stamped code from the company that made it. That code has two parts: a maker code that names the supplier, and a date code that gives the year and the exact week the pot was built. Read them together and you have a part dated to the week.
Pot codes are one of the most reliable dating tools on a vintage Fender, because they're almost impossible to fake without replacing the whole pot. The catch is what they date. The code dates the potentiometer, not the guitar. The two line up only when the pots are original to the instrument.
Where To Find The Code
The code is stamped on the side or the back of the pot's metal casing, so you have to see the pots to read them. On a vintage Fender the controls are mounted on the pickguard, like a Stratocaster, or on a metal control plate, like a Telecaster, so you reach the pots by taking off whichever one the knobs sit on. The stamp is small and often grimy, so a phone photo you can zoom into beats squinting at it in the cavity.

The knobs stay put through all of this. The pots are mounted to the pickguard or the control plate, so they lift out with it and you read the codes off the backs with the knobs still on. Nobody needs to pull a knob to date a Fender.

Read The Maker Code
The first three digits are the EIA source code, an industry number that names the company that made the pot. Four suppliers show up on vintage Fenders:

Fender never made its own pots. It bought them from these suppliers, so the maker code names the company that built the pot, such as CTS or Stackpole, not Fender, since Fender never made its own. CTS, code 137, is the one you'll see most often. A few rarer codes such as 106 for Allen-Bradley exist too, but they seldom appear in a Fender's guitar controls.
That first code matters for more than naming the maker. It always comes first on the casing, so the digits stamped right after it are the date. Find the maker code and it points you straight to the numbers that give the year and the week.
Which Maker Points To Which Years
Fender switched suppliers as contracts and supply ran out, so the name on the pot is a dating clue on its own. Before you even read the date code, the maker narrows the era:

Use this as a sanity check, not a verdict. If a guitar sold to you as a 1957 Stratocaster has CTS pots in it, the supplier era says slow down and look harder. Fender was buying Stackpole in 1957. It does not automatically mean the guitar is wrong, because a pot can be replaced and a 1980s reissue can wear a period-looking part, but it does mean the pots are not telling the story the seller is.
Decode The Date
The digits after the maker code are the date code. They read as year, then week. There are two formats, depending on the era:

Worked example. A pot stamped 3046403 breaks down as 304 for Stackpole, 64 for 1964, and 03 for the third week. So that pot was made in the third week of 1964, and the guitar was built no earlier than that. Here are real pots showing the maker and date codes up close:



Watch the decade on short codes. A three-digit date code gives only one year digit, so it tells you the year within a decade but not which decade. In practice a single year digit points to the 1950s, because Fender's suppliers moved to the two-digit year format with the 1960s. Confirm the decade against the rest of the guitar rather than assuming it.
Not Every Number On The Casing Is A Date
Pots often carry a second number that has nothing to do with when they were made. Fender stamped its own factory part numbers on them, and those get misread as dates all the time. The quickest way to tell them apart is the week.
A week can only run from 01 to 52. If the last two digits of the number you're looking at come out higher than 52, you are not reading a date code. You've found a part number, an inventory number, or the resistance rating. Go back and find the group of digits that starts with one of the four maker codes, and read the date from there.
The part numbers most commonly reported on Fender pots are 021857 on a 250K and 021832 on a 1 Meg, with 021357 also turning up on 250K pots. Treat these as a familiar sight rather than a lookup table, because the published lists are thin and not every number has been pinned down.
Pot Codes Give The Earliest Possible Date
Here's the rule every appraiser works by. A pot code tells you the earliest the guitar could have been built, never the exact day. Fender bought pots in bulk and pulled them from a parts bin, so a pot could sit for weeks or months before it went into a guitar. A pot dated to the 32nd week of 1959 means the guitar was assembled no earlier than August 1959. It could just as easily be late 1959 or early 1960.
That gap gets much wider in the CBS years. CBS bought pots the way a corporation buys anything, and somewhere in the mid-1960s Fender took delivery of an enormous lot of CTS pots. The bulk of that purchase was 1966, and the supply lasted around five years. That makes 1966 codes routine in guitars built through about 1971, and 1967 codes have been reported in guitars as late as 1973. The guitar can be newer than its pots. It can never be older than its latest original pot.
This is the single most common reason a good guitar gets called a fake. Someone reads a 1966 date code inside a 1970 Stratocaster, decides the pots must have been swapped in from an older guitar, and walks away from something completely correct. On a CBS-era Fender, pots several years older than the build are the expected result, not the warning sign.
When the pots disagree, majority rules. If three pots read early 1962 and one reads late 1963, the late 1963 pot is a replacement, not the build date. Read all of them, not just one.
What Else The Pot Tells You
The date code gets the attention, but the pot itself carries three more things worth reading: what it's rated at, how it turns, and how the knob attaches. Each one can catch a part that came from somewhere else.
Resistance Values
Fender matched the pot value to the pickups. The value is usually printed on the casing, and a value that doesn't belong on the model is a strong hint the pot was replaced by somebody chasing a different sound.

A 250K pot sitting in a Jazzmaster is the version of this you'll meet most often. It isn't a fake guitar, it's a guitar somebody wanted to sound warmer. It still costs you originality.
Audio Taper And Linear Taper
Taper is how the resistance changes as you turn the knob. An audio taper, marked A or AUD, is shaped to match how your ear actually hears loudness, so the sweep feels even the whole way from 10 down to 0. A linear taper, marked B or LIN, changes in a straight line, which sounds reasonable on paper and feels like an on-off switch in practice, with most of the volume dropping away in the last part of the turn.
Don't jump to conclusions on a linear pot, though. Fender fitted them in the 1950s: the 1956 Stratocaster further down this page still wears its original pot stamped 250K LIN, with a Stackpole date code that matches the guitar. Audio taper became the norm later on. Taper is a clue to read next to the date code and the rest of the harness, not a verdict by itself.
Solid Shaft And Split Shaft
You can read this one off the knob without touching anything. A tiny set screw in the side of the knob means a solid shaft underneath, smooth all the way round. No set screw means a push-on knob gripping a knurled split shaft. Telecasters, Precision Basses, and Jazz Basses use solid shafts. Stratocasters use split shafts.
That split shaft exists because of a mistake. The first Stratocasters in the spring of 1954 went out with 100K solid-shaft pots on a brass shaft and brittle polystyrene knobs, and the knobs cracked, sometimes just being pushed on at the factory. By around September Fender had moved to knurled split-shaft 250K pots and redesigned the knob with three support spokes under the skirt. The plastic itself stayed polystyrene for another couple of years, so it was the shape that fixed this, not the material. It's a small piece of 1954 history you can still see in your control cavity seventy years later.
American Threads Versus Import Threads
American pots are built to inch measurements. The threaded bushing that pokes through the pickguard is 3/8 inch across and the shaft is 1/4 inch. Import pots are metric, usually 8mm or 10mm, and the two do not interchange. An American nut will not thread onto a metric pot, and an American pot will not drop into an import pickguard without opening the hole up.
That makes it a useful test, but only in one direction. A metric pot in an American-built Fender did not come from the Fender factory, whatever the date code stamped on it says. A 3/8 inch bushing proves nothing on its own, because every modern American CTS pot is 3/8 inch too. Thread size rules a pot out. Only the maker code and the date code can rule one in.
Read The Rest Of The Control Cavity
Once the pickguard is off you can see everything the pots are wired to, and all of it changed over the years too. When the capacitor, the wire, and the hardware all agree with the pot date, you have a harness that has been left alone. When one of them jumps eras, that's where to look closer.
The Tone Capacitor
The capacitor is the small component wired to the tone control, and it bleeds treble to ground as you roll the tone back. Fender changed type and value repeatedly, and in the early years the whole circuit changed around it, so watch the model column as well as the date. Everything through 1953 came from Cornell Dubilier as paper, foil, and wax.

The one thing to remember on a blackguard. A real 1950 or 1951 Broadcaster or Nocaster should have tubular brown waxed-paper capacitors and nothing else. Flat rectangular phone book caps do not belong in one. They arrive with the dark circuit in late 1952, so a phone book cap in a guitar sold to you as a 1951 is telling you something. And a ceramic disc anywhere in a blackguard is a later modification, every time.
Here is what three of those eras actually look like, from guitars that came across my bench:



Before you judge an old cap by ear, know that paper-in-oil caps drift as they age. The moisture barrier breaks down, the wax and oil dry out, and the measured value climbs, so a 0.05 can read 0.07 or higher after sixty years. That's a real part of why two 1957 Stratocasters that look identical can sound noticeably different. A drifted cap is age, not damage, and it is not a reason to replace an original one in a collectable guitar.
A cap marked 0.047 is not a later part sneaking in either. 0.047 and 0.05 are the same nominal value, written first in Fender's old labeling and then in the modern standard series. In a guitar circuit they behave identically.
One caution on the later rows. From 1954 those describe the Stratocaster, because that's the guitar these questions get asked about. The Telecaster kept running a more involved circuit with more than one capacitor in it, so a Tele with two caps in the cavity is not a modified guitar, it's a Tele. Check one against Telecaster wiring for its year rather than against the Strat rows.
Cloth Wire And Plastic Wire
This is one of the easiest era tells in the whole cavity, and you can see it without touching anything. Through late 1967, Fender used stranded wire in a woven cotton braid. The color scheme goes back to the start of production: black for ground, white for the neck pickup's hot lead, and yellow for the bridge pickup's. You don't strip that wire, you just push the braid back and solder.
Under CBS, Fender changed to plastic-insulated wire to save time and money. The changeover ran through 1968 while the old cloth stock got used up, so a 1968 guitar can honestly have either one, or both. Cloth wire in a 1972 guitar is the combination that should stop you. Color is weaker evidence than the insulation itself here, because odd colors like green and blue show up as ground wires on some cloth-era guitars too.
Solder Joints
Original factory joints are neat and small, and after sixty years they carry an even, settled patina with flux still dried around the edge. What you're looking for is not shine, it's consistency. Every joint in an untouched harness aged in the same room for the same number of years, so they should all look like each other.
The tell for a repair is a joint that breaks that pattern. Watch for stacked solder, where somebody dropped fresh solder on top of an old joint without melting the original underneath. It leaves a visible line between the bright new metal and the old dull metal, and it's one of the clearest signs of later work in the cavity. Scorched wood and melted wire insulation nearby say the same thing.
Be careful about the opposite claim, though. Plenty of guides tell you original solder should look bright and mirror-like. That's a rule for judging a joint somebody made this afternoon, and it's the wrong test here. Tin-lead solder dulls and greys as it oxidizes, so on a real 1960s Fender bright silver solder is evidence of recent work, not of quality. A properly reflowed old joint can also end up looking like all the others, which is why mismatch between joints is a stronger signal than how any single one of them looks.
What A Pot Code Can't Prove
A pot code dates the pot and nothing else. It only speaks for the guitar when the pots are original, so look for fresh solder or a code that sits ten or more years off from the others. Either one points to a replaced pot.
It helps to know what original looks like too. On an untouched harness everything ages together: the solder joints sit clean and a little dull with a ring of flux still around the edge, and the wire and capacitor match the era the pots point to. That's the whole reason to read the rest of the cavity before you decide.

A correct pot code also doesn't prove a guitar is all original. That's a whole-instrument call that weighs the neck date, the pickups, the tuners, the hardware, and the finish together. Treat the pot code as one strong input, then line it up with everything else.
Cross-Check With The Other Methods
Pot codes are strongest next to the other dating clues. Pair them with the neck heel date for the single best two-part check on a vintage Fender, then confirm with the pickup date codes and the body dates, and read the whole guitar against the physical features, the logo, hardware, and plastics. When all of them agree, you have a build date you can stand behind.

Common Questions About Fender Pot Codes
Do I Have To Take My Guitar Apart To Read The Pot Codes?
You need to see the back or the side of the potentiometers, which usually means taking off the pickguard or the metal control plate the knobs are mounted on. If you aren't comfortable doing that, don't force it. Get in touch and I'll help, or bring the guitar by and I'll read the codes for you.
My Pot Code Is Older Than My Serial Number Suggests. Is That A Problem?
Usually not. A pot code dates the pot, and the guitar was assembled on or after that date, so a pot slightly older than the build is exactly what you want to see. A pot dated years newer than the rest of the guitar is the real red flag.
Why Does My 1969 Fender Have 1966 Pots?
Because that's how CBS bought parts. Fender took delivery of an enormous lot of CTS pots in the mid-1960s and kept pulling from that supply for about five years. Pots three or four years older than the guitar are the normal, correct result on a CBS-era Fender, not evidence of a swap. It's the most common reason a perfectly original guitar gets wrongly called a parts guitar.
My Pot Has Two Different Numbers On It. Which One Is The Date?
The date code is the group that starts with a maker code, 134, 137, 140, or 304. The other number is usually a Fender factory part number such as 021357. The fastest way to tell is the last two digits: a week only runs from 01 to 52, so if those digits come out higher than 52, you aren't looking at a date.
What If My Fender Has Two Different Pot Dates?
That's common and fine when the dates sit within a few weeks or months of each other. Majority rules. If three pots read early 1962 and one reads late 1963, the odd one out is almost certainly a replacement, not the build date.
Can A Pot Code Fake A Vintage Date?
Not without swapping the whole pot, and a replaced pot gives itself away with fresh solder and a date that breaks from the others. That difficulty is exactly why original pots are one of the most reliable dating tools you have.
