A remarkable and beautifully preserved piece of Gibson history, this 1958 Gibson Super 400 stands as a testament to the company’s finest craftsmanship — with an intriguing factory history that makes it truly one-of-a-kind.

Originally built in 1958, this Super 400 appears to have returned to Gibson in the early-to-mid 1960s, where it received a factory refinish and a factory stereo conversion — the same period when Gibson was developing the Super 400CES Stereo and experimenting with advanced wiring configurations. The work was performed entirely in Kalamazoo, ensuring that the instrument retains full Gibson pedigree throughout.

The guitar was fitted with a pair of short-magnet PAF humbuckers — the very same type found in early-’60s Gibsons. The decal stickers are missing, but all construction details, winding specs, and tonal response are consistent with authentic PAFs of the period. (see photos, the covers were removed for authentication of the pickups and are back on now.) They deliver that unmistakable voice: clear, three-dimensional cleans, sweet compression, and rich harmonic bloom when pushed — everything you want from a golden-era Gibson archtop.

Aside from the factory work, the guitar is original throughout, including its hardware, electronics, binding, and appointments. It plays beautifully, with the smooth, fast action and effortless response that make these top-tier Gibson archtops legendary among both jazz and session players.

One of the first things that stands out on this Super 400 is the extraordinary figured maple used throughout. The back and sides display deep, three-dimensional flame, with tight, undulating grain that shifts beautifully under light — the kind of high-grade maple Gibson reserved only for their very best instruments. The neck is equally stunning, carved from vividly flamed maple that runs the entire length of the shaft, adding both visual elegance and a touch of snap and clarity to the tone. Together, these woods give the guitar a beautiful and elegant look and a lively, resonant acoustic voice — the unmistakable look and sound of Gibson’s top-tier craftsmanship at its peak.

Cosmetically, the refinish has aged gracefully, with a light, natural patina that complements the guitar’s elegant lines and carved spruce top. The craftsmanship and acoustic resonance remain fully intact — warm, open, and authoritative. The spot where the pickguard attaches to the fingerboard extension has a little bit of fill in, likely from the pickguard nail wearing out its hole. It it barely visible.

An exceptional factory-modified 1958 Gibson Super 400, blending late-’50s tonewood magic with early-’60s innovation.
A rare opportunity to own a truly unique piece of Gibson history that both plays and sounds every bit as good as it looks.

The guitar plays incredibly well with low action, original frets and an amazing feel. It sounds wonderful with the PAFs and varitone. If you think the Varitone sucks tone, it doesnt! Just turn your amp up a little and enjoy the versatility! There’s a reason so many session plays liked the varitone, There are Hank Garland tones for days here!

Includes its original hard case.
