A true gem from the early Norlin years, this 1972 Gibson Les Paul Custom showcases several rare and highly sought-after features that make it a standout among ’70s Les Pauls.

Most notably, it retains its original Gibson-embossed pickup covers, a feature seen only for a short time in the early 1970s. These covers were a brief factory experiment — discontinued almost as soon as they appeared — making surviving examples like this one particularly collectible. Complementing that are the original waffle-back tuners, a hallmark of early-’70s Customs.

Condition is excellent overall, with only very light playwear and light aging throughout. The multi-ply binding, split-diamond headstock inlay, and gold hardware all remain striking, giving the guitar that unmistakable “tuxedo” look the Custom is famous for.

Tonally, this Les Paul delivers everything you’d hope for from a well-seasoned ’70s Custom — rich, sustaining low end, a punchy and articulate midrange, and a smooth, singing top end. The ebony fretboard contributes snap and clarity, while the solid mahogany/maple construction gives it the depth and authority that define the model.

The neck has that comfortable, rounded early-’70s carve — substantial but very playable — and the guitar balances beautifully, a testament to Gibson’s craftsmanship during this period. The guitar has been professionally refretted ( a big upgrade from the fretless wonder frets, IMO) and plays incredibly well.

Includes original hard case. Weighs 10.05lbs

A rare and classy 1972 Les Paul Custom with all the right features — embossed covers, waffle-backs, and that unmistakable Black Beauty charm.
