Here’s one you don’t see every day — a late-’70s Gibson Flying V2, the short-lived but highly distinctive evolution of the classic V design. This one dates to 1979, finished in a rich natural tone that shows off the multi-layered walnut and maple body construction unique to this model.

Overall condition is good, with only light cosmetic wear consistent with careful use. There’s a small area of guitar-stand wear on the bottom edge of the headstock, purely cosmetic and shown in photos. Otherwise, this is a clean and honest example of one of Gibson’s most ambitious late-’70s designs.

This guitar bears the “Factory Second” stamp, but as seasoned Gibson collectors and experts will tell you, this designation in no way indicates a flaw in sound or structure. During this era, Gibson frequently used the “2” mark for purely cosmetic reasons — often for something as trivial as a faint finish blemish or a slightly misaligned logo. Many long-time dealers and former Gibson employees have confirmed that these “seconds” came off the same production line, built by the same craftspeople, with no difference in playability or tone. On this particular example, the reason for the 2nd is a mystery. It looks perfect.

Sonically, the V2 delivers everything you’d hope for from this era of Gibson innovation — bold, articulate output from its unique “boomerang” humbuckers, with a clear midrange and plenty of sustain. It’s a surprisingly versatile instrument, capable of both cutting rock tones and smooth, singing leads.

Includes original hard case.

A rare and striking Gibson from the Norlin years — equal parts conversation piece, collector’s item, and serious player.
