Just in from the grandson of the original owner in Missouri, this 1945 Martin 000-21 is an absolutely wonderful-sounding example from one of Martin’s most revered eras. With its straight grained Brazilian rosewood back and sides and Adirondack spruce top, this guitar delivers a voice that is nothing short of inspiring—open, warm, and deeply resonant and woody.
The tone of this particular instrument stands out even among its peers. It has a beautifully balanced response, with shimmering trebles that are clear, crisp and articulate, a clear and woody midrange, and a round, piano-like bass that fills the room. Notes bloom effortlessly and sustain with great clarity. This one really projects and has an exceptional volume balance between all of the strings.
When we received this guitar, it had two top cracks and two back cracks. They have been repaired and cleated and are completely stable. it has been refretted quite a long time ago and the guitar seems to have been rarely played since as the frets are in great shape with no wear or divots. The new frets are very interesting, they have a slightly brassy look to them, but are not soft or brassy, they are hard and feel like normal nickel silver frets. They look and feel great, and are perhaps a less conventional alloy from days gone by. The neck has just been reset and the nut and saddle are new bone ones. The guitar has a perfect neck angle and the reset was done by Joe Albright, the best around. He used a masterfully made ebony fingerboard extension shim to avoid fallaway at the body. It is imperceptible. Truly the perfect neck reset that this guitar deserves!
The finish shows tasteful aging consistent with its vintage, giving the guitar a warm, inviting look that matches its voice perfectly.
The neck has a comfortable, slightly rounded wartime profile, and the setup is excellent—easy to play with a lively, responsive feel. It is setup with low action currently and is a dream to fingerpick! It is very enjoyable to sit and play, weighing in at only 3.68lbs!
This 1945 000-21 is far more than a collector’s piece—it’s a player’s dream. With a tone that easily ranks among the finest postwar Martins, it’s an instrument that rewards every note and inspires the owner to pick it up and play.
